I majored in English in college, but learned graphic design from a master in the field, Karen Shea. This was in the mid-90s and while we worked in QuarkXpress and Photoshop, we still had actual film output for printing presses. Digital photos and printing plates were not yet in use. Learning the early fundamentals was a great way to appreciate future advances.
